Where does Bikram yoga come from?

Bikram Choudhury founded the Bikram yoga style in India during the 1970s and it's popularity gradually spread to the United States and Europe by the late 1970s. Bikram, who was born in Calcutta in 1946 and started practicing yoga when he was only four years old under Bishnu Ghosh. He practiced yoga for 4-6 hour every day. At the age of thirteen, he won the National India Yoga Championship. He was undefeated for the following three years and retired as the undisputed All-India National Yoga Champion. At 17, Choudhury suffered a knee injury that led European doctors to believe that he would never walk again, but yoga healed his knee and inspired him to found Bikram Yoga and take it to communities around the world. Bikram later developed the 26 postures sequence and founded Bikram’s Yoga College of India. By 2006, he had 1,650 yoga studios around the world.

what should I wear when doing Bikram yoga?

You should wear as little as possible when doing Bikram yoga it'll be intensely hot and you'll be sweating profusely. We recommend you wear clothes that breathes well, are ventilated and are make from moisture wicking material like Viva Athletic's compression tights and compression shorts. Avoid wearing clothes made of cotton as cotton tends to trap and hold your sweat which will weigh you down. Next to nothing…or anything that feels like nothing, that is. Clothing that breathes and is moisture wicking is ideal, and anything with mesh and extra venting will also be your best friend in the heat. Do yourself a favor and steer clear of cotton and other fabrics that will hold sweat and weigh you down.

Water, water, water! Remember to drink plenty of water before and during your Bikram yoga practice. Right after practice, drink as much water as you can to rehydrate you body. Keeping well hydrated is super important and prevent you from getting dizzy and give you relief from the heat. Bring a towel to you Bikram yoga class, you'll be needing it!

What to expect during Bikram yoga class

You can expect to be sweating a lot. You'll be sweating from all parts of your body, even in places you never realized even had sweat glands like you elbows and shins. As for the type of people who will be doing Bikram yoga with you, you'll find that there will be a diverse group of people in the room from beginners to the advanced yoga students. At your first Bikram yoga class, don't feel pressured to push you self too hard. Do what you'll comfortable, don't feel like you have to do all 26 poses. Listen to your body, and if a pose become uncomfortable, stop and modify if necessary. Give you body sufficient rest between poses and proceed at a pace that you're comfortable with.
